do we still have time???

 tardiness and absenteeism

As quoted by a Latin proverb, “It is better late than never”. But is it really better? Good morning fellow students and professors, today I would be talking to you about tardiness and absenteeism.

People today in our generation have lost sight of punctuality, which then results to tardiness and furthermore, to absenteeism. Let us define first tardiness. Tardiness literally means occurring later than expected . Students who are late to school or to class miss essential portions of the lesson and create disruptions in the academic process for themselves and other students. When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Tardiness takes other students' attention away from a teacher's lesson, leading to more behavior problems and missed instruction. A student who develops a pattern of tardiness, excused or unexcused, shall be offered counseling with the Guidance Councilor to determine the cause of the tardiness. Most of the research that I found on school tardiness address the causes of tardiness, rather than the effects of tardiness.  In most cases, the causes of tardiness also cause poor performance in school. So, there is often a correlation between tardiness, poor
performance, and these factors that presumably cause both.

Factors of tardiness doesn’t only rely on the student’s perspective, it also relies on the circumstances at school and at home. Some causes of tardiness from student’s point includes: they hate the subject, it’s difficult for them, or it is not that interesting so they intentionally come late to class. While at school: it is either the teacher’s too strict, too boring, or doesn’t know much about that subject matter which leads students not to participate, and be uninterested in coming to class. And at home: it may vary from parents to siblings, like if they were unsupportive, or more likely not to care to they’re child. There are many factors that causes tardiness of a student, it might be from family, the school, or the student himself which varies from physical, mental and emotional reasons. And it can be intentionally or unintentionally. As the quote have said being late doesn’t always give disadvantage, in some point, it gives us advantages. The only thing we can do is consistently and immediately deal with it. But I’m not suggesting you become punitive with each tardiness of a student.

Now, let us define absenteeism, absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation, it is as an indicator of poor individual performance. Like tardiness, causes of it may vary, some are:
serious accidents and illness, low morale, poor studying conditions, boredom on school, poor supervision, personal problems (financial, marital, substance abuse, child care etc.), poor physical fitness, transportation problem and stress. It may also indicate low performance of teachers, students' dissatisfaction of the school's services, or lack of or poor academic and non-academic structures or policies that address the problems or factors influencing or reinforcing this behavior. Not all of these causes can be prevented by taking a positive approach to things. By showing the students that you care, you can help lower absenteeism in school.

School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators, teachers, parents, and the society, in general, as well as for the students, in particular. Parents are financially burdened for having their children to stay longer in the school, having to re-enroll them in subjects where they fail due to excessive absences. To prevent absenteeism, the school must adopt a systematic approach to provide necessary remediation to help their students. These students need assistance to overcome their problems and to achieve in school. When counseling in the school setting is not sufficient, these students need to be referred to appropriate services in the community. However, schools should implement absence policies which make no distinction between absences for genuine illness and absence for inappropriate reasons.

As a college student, we are already at the right age to know what is right and what is wrong, it is up to us to do what is best for us. But our school policies, teachers, guidance councilors and parents are always there to guide us and show us the right path. And as a student, I feel for those who suffer from tardiness and absenteeism, they might have a proper or improper reason and excuse, but at the end of the day, it is still ourselves who will suffer and face those consequences of our action. Before I end this speech, I want to share to you this verse from the bible, hopefully you will remember this, from Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven”. Again, Good morning and thank you.
